Happy Summer!
School’s out! The children are happy, and so are the teachers. We all look
forward to a stretch of time with no schoolwork to do. For a while we can enjoy
the feeling of freedom, but soon reality will set in.
Most children really cannot afford more than two months of watching TV or
playing video games. Skills learned in school will be forgotten if they are not
used. That is why a lot of time is spent in review every fall. It does not have
to be that way!
Many children go to summer camp while parents work. Others are home. Learning
activities can fit into either schedule.
Many families travel during the summer. Travel provides opportunities for
learning history, geography, and more. Be on the lookout for "mini-lessons"
while you are on the road. Does your child know where you are and where you are
going? Young children have the chance to learn about cities and states and
compass directions. Older children can learn to read maps and calculate mileage
and driving time. Are we there yet?
Car travel games can be fun. Who can find the most states on license plates?
Play an alphabet game with roadway signs and billboards. Practice memorizing
states and capitals. "Hangman" can also be played in the car. Commercially
prepared travel games and trivia games are available.
While at home, try not to let your child become a couch potato. What sports
activities are accessible? Get out and go to museums and nature areas near you.
There is history and science all around. Have your own field trips! Check your
local newspaper for information about special events.
After a time, boredom may set in. Children may begin craft projects or
science experiments and building projects. These may be homemade or one of the
many excellent kits that can be purchased. Does your child have a hobby? This is
a good time to begin or add to a collection.
Have a great summer!
