A Self-Improvement Plan
Famous American Benjamin
Franklin, scientist, inventor, statesman, diplomat, writer, tried to make things
better for the city of Philadelphia and the new country of the United States of
America. As a young man his goal was to become a better person
himself. He had a plan. You can read more about it in his
autobiography, but for now, here is my explanation of the 13 virtues that
Franklin chose to practice in order to become more morally perfect. See if
they don't help us in our quest to help children improve the quality of their
characters.
1. Temperance:
Try not to eat too much, and try to stay away from sweets and junk foods
whenever possible. Make sure your meals are nutritious.
2. Silence: Only
speak when you have something useful to say. Don't talk just to hear
yourself make noise.
3. Order: Have a
place for everything and keep everything in its place. Do your homework
and your chores before you play.
4. Resolution:
Decide what you need to do and do it.
5. Frugality:
Don't waste money on things you don't need. Save your money for the things
that you will need in the future. Buy things that will help you or other
people. Try not to waste anything. (Remember to recycle.) Make
sure the things you buy are of good quality and will last.
6. Industry:
Make every minute count. Always be doing something useful. Don't
waste time.
7. Sincerity:
Say what you mean and mean what you say. Try not to hurt other people with
your words. Think kind thoughts and think before you speak.
8. Justice: Play
by the rules and try always to be fair. Do good to others and never cheat
or hurt other people.
9. Moderation:
Get over your anger if someone annoys you. Don't react, but respond
calmly. Don't try to get back at someone who hurts you.
10. Cleanliness:
Keep yourself, your clothes, your room, and your desk clean. Always clean
up after yourself.
11. Tranquility:
Don't get upset over small problems , things that happen a lot or things that
can't be helped.
12. Chastity:
Avoid using bad language or sex talk. Stay away from R- or X-rated movies
or games. Listen to music that doesn't put anyone down, men or women.
Be friends with boys and girls alike, and don't worry about having boyfriends or
girlfriends. It will all happen when the time is right. Talk to your
parents about it.
13. Humility:
Don't think you are better than anyone else. You probably aren't, but even
if you are, other people won't like bragging. Everyone has areas of their
lives that need improvement.
